Club Constitutions
Your student organization constitution is the most important document your club has. It outlines not only what officers your group will have, but their jobs and how they are elected. It is vital that your student organization officers and advisor be aware of the contents of your constitution and follows them.
This page is designed to help you find your constitution, provide information on what Boise State requires be in a constitution and outline the process for amending your constitution.
Misconceptions about Club Constitutions
Student organizations often have misconceptions about their club constitution. The following list is designed to clarify these misconceptions.
- Only the students listed on the officer card filling constitutional positions can make reservations, check out university vehicles or access other student organization services.
- The number of officers listed in your constitution is NOT a suggestion-you must have listed on your officer card as many people as you have officer positions. Additional officers will not be recorded or have access to club services.
- ASBSU rules do NOT require organizations to have elections or votes during an official, "sit down" meeting. If your organization and its officers agree that an e-mail election or vote is acceptable, and nothing in your constitution forbids such, then it is legitimate.
- You MAY add additional duties to officer positions by placing those duties in bylaws.
- ASBSU Judiciary does NOT need to approve bylaws. Only constitutions and constitutional revisions need to be approved by Judiciary.
- You do NOT have to update your constitution annually. However, it is strongly recommended you review your constitution (comparing it to the sample constitution) every two years.
- Clubs with constitutions older than five years may be asked by ASBSU Judiciary to update them.
- Even if your constitution is old, and does not have current constitutional requirements listed in it, your organization still has to follow all ASBSU rules.
