Amending Your Club's Constitution

The process for amending your constitution is relatively simple, but does require you to pay close attention to detail. ASBSU Judiciary rules require that when any part of a constitution is amended, the entire document must be brought up into compliance with the requirements listed in bold in the sample constitution.

For example, say your organization plans to create a new officer position. Even though you do not plan to change any other part of your constitution, you still must review each section in comparison to the sample constitution to ensure that all sections are current. If your constitution is over two years old, likely all sections are NOT current.

Here is the process for constitutional amendments:

  1. Ensure you are reviewing the most current copy of your constitution on file with ASBSU Judiciary. The most current copy can be found at this Web site.

  2. If your organization's constitution is over four years old, it may be easier to take the sample constitution and create a new constitution from scratch than to try to find all the minor variances between the old constitution and the sample.

  3. Read the amendment section of your constitution, the sections that address voting percentages and the sections which outline who can vote.

  4. Draft the changes to your constitution and e-mail the draft changes to Kara Fink, program coordinator, Student Activities and Student Organization at karafink@boisestate.edu to proof read.

  5. Once Kara e-mails you back with any revisions make the revisions and have the club membership vote to approve the changes.

  6. Submit a final electronic copy of the revised constitution to Kara Fink and turn in two constitutions to the Student Organization office desk, second floor, Student Union. BE SURE the vote totals are on the last page (see the sample constitution for how the vote should be recorded).

  7. ASBSU Judiciary will review the constitution and vote to approve it.
  8. Should you need help in the process, or are unclear about these steps, contact Kara Fink via e-mail, or call 426-5951.
